<sp1> Haha, I hear of that. Ok, er as you know my name is [Ws-s] ***, and I think my experience is [Ws-s] very interesting. Er because [Ws-s] I I am from the center of China to another center of China [Pa-r]. I you know er I'm from Shanxi Province [Wi-e], and there [Wth-z] is a city called Xianyang, do you know? </sp1>
<sp2> Yes. </sp2>
<sp1> Yes, and the mm the center of China [Pa-r] in geography [Wa-i] i is in it. So er and now I'm in Beijing, as everybody knows [Ws-s], Beijing is the cultural [Wt-ch] and political center of China. So I think [Wth-s] I'm from one center of China to another, so I think [Wth-s] it's very interesting. Do you think [Wth-s] so? </sp1>
<sp3> Yes. </sp3>
<interlocutor> Ok, you please. </interlocutor>
<sp2> Yes, my name is [Ws-s] ***, and well I'm from Beijing, so I'm native here. And well now I am a second year student, and major in Electronic and Engineering. So I'm a Engineering student. And well yes...during my spare time, I like do some reading. And another hobby is I like traveling a lot. Yes, mm sometimes I travel with friends to some places all over China. It's quite interesting. </sp2>
<interlocutor> Ok, ***. </interlocutor>
<sp3> Yes, my name is ***, and I study Accounting in my university. Yes I have many interests in my life. Such as painting, singing, dancing and so on. And my interesting experience is that I am very fond of studying languages. Yes, I spend much time everyday [Wv-w] on my language studying. Yes today I'm very glad to have the opportunity to know you, and I really ??? with you on some given subjects. I hope we can make good co-operations in our team work. </sp3>
<interlocutor> Ok, now that we know each other, we can do some group work. First of all I'd like to ask each of you to say something about festivals. </interlocutor>
<sp1> Ok. </sp1>
<sp2> Chinese festival or western festival? </sp2>
<interlocutor> ***. </interlocutor>
<sp1> Ok. </sp1>
<interlocutor> Which is your favorite festival? </interlocutor>
<sp1> Er, I think [Wth-s] maybe er when I was [Ws-s] young, maybe I like the chil- chil er Children's Day. And now I like the [Wth-z] Spring Festival, because [Ws-s] it's the biggest and most important festival in China [Pa-r], right? Er so maybe I love this festival. Er the reason for that may be in er in in these [Wth-z] [Ws-s] er aspects [Wa-e] [We-ae]. Er first mm this er during this this festival, we may er meet many friends and er and and other peoples [Ws-s] er you you want to meet. Er because [Ws-s] on on these [Wth-z] [Ws-s] days [Ws-s] er these [Wth-z] [Ws-s] people er come back from er many places to hometown [W2ow-a] er to have the meeting and so on. So I think [Wth-s] it's very interesting. Er for the Children they maybe er very glad [Wa-ai] because they may earn the [Wth-z] money we call ?red box?, er it's a good thing [Wth-s] for them [Wth-z]. </sp1>
<interlocutor> Ok, ***. It seems that some young Chinese enjoy celebrating western festivals. What do you think about it? </interlocutor>
<sp3> Well, yes, since we've been open up to the outside world maybe over twenty years ago. Yes we introduce a lot of western festivals into China. Well yes, it is I don't think well probably many western festivals they have some religious origins [Ws-s], for example to celebrate the ???, Jesus Chris, or the reservation of it. And but now I don't think many people still remember these [Ws-s] religion religious reasons, we only just to have opportunities to meet on with friends, have fun, have dinner together for enjoying ourselves. So I think it's quite ok not big problem actually, and still I I like I prefer Chinese traditional festivals, ok. </sp3>
<interlocutor> Ok, ***, is Christmas an important festival in China? </interlocutor>
<sp3> Oh, I think so. And another important thing is that I myself is a Christian. </sp3>
<sp2> Oh, ooh. </sp2>
<sp3> I believe in God. Really, I think I I think God is really exist in our life, and he gives me many help. </sp3>
<interlocutor> Ok, now let's move on to something more specific. The topic for our discussion today is about eastern and western festivals [Ws-s]. Each of you will be given a picture showing two festivals [Ws-s]. I'd like you to talk about these two festivals [Ws-s] and say something about about how they are celebrated. You have one minute to prepare and each of you will have one and a half minutes to give your presentation. Don't worry if I interrupt you when time is [Ws-s] up. Now here are your pictures [Ws-s]. </interlocutor>
<interlocutor> Ok, ***, would you please begin. *** and ***, please put your pictures aside, and listen to *** what he has to say. </interlocutor>
<sp1> Ok. </sp1>
<sp2> Yes, firstly I want to talk about Mid-autumn Day. Well it's a as everybody knows, it's a traditional Chinese [Ws-s] festival. And coin coincidentally, this year we have we have mid-autumn day and national day as the same day. So I know so we have a seven-day holiday. So it's very nice to to able to have a family reunion for many people. And yes on mid-autumn day often [Wo-ou] we will have moon cake with the family and enjoy the beautiful moonlight together. So it's very harmonious I think, very nice, peaceful. And the New Year's Day, yes as everybody know it's it's a it's a Western Festival first, but now I think mm everybody will have fun on that day. And yes as we see on the picture, er in New York, people will celebrate the New Year's Day on the Time Square, and you see the big apple come down from the a big tower, a very tall tower. So yi I think for for people the festival is just something someday that we can have a rest and forget about all the work, about the study, and just relax, enjoy ourselves. </sp2>
<interlocutor> Ok, now ***, how about yours? </interlocutor>
<sp1> Ok, er I'm lucky to choose the festival I love the best-Spring Festival. Er just as I said [Wai-e] it's the er most important festival in China [Pa-r]. Er we celebrate it [Pt-e] by many ways [Ws-s], er like [Pk-e] er we have dinner together at the [Wth-z] eve of the day and eat [Pt-e] the [Wth-z] dumplings [Ws-s] er to celebrate it. And er in the morning er and in the morning of the day, we er we pulled [Wu-ou] the er we pulled [Wu-ou] the pictures called Nianhua and so on er to er for the religious reasons [W2s-s], but now it's a form of our Spring Festival. And and the [Wth-z] western er festival I choose is Christmas Day. Er and I think it's the most important festival in the western. Er on on Christmas Day, er I think [Wth-s] [Pk-e] the western people er also have many ways [Ws-s] to celebrate [S3]. Er er at the eve on the eve of the day, they [Wth-z] pulled [Wu-ou] the soccer at the end of the bed [We-ae], er hope the Christmas Father put [Wu-ou] the pre-presents [W1e-ae] in it. Er so I think [Wth-s] maybe it's very interesting. Ok. </sp1>
<interlocutor> Ok. </interlocutor>
<sp3> Yes, I'm glad to say something about Dragon Boat Festival. You know it's a traditional festival in China [Pa-r]. Mm and at this day, we often go boating in a [Pa-r] big river. Really it's very er there are many people looking, yes. Er and at this day at this day we have we will go to eat the special food, I am sorry I don't know how to er say it speak it into er in English, er but all of you know er what's that. And the the western festival April 1st day, yes it's really a traditional er a traditional festival in western. Er on the day on the April 1st day, people will like to do tricks on people, and we will also we will we will ??? that we will we will yes we are cheat by by others, but we don't feel er angry. Do you think? It's really still happy, yes. </sp3>
<interlocutor> Yes, we all have some idea of different festivals [Ws-s], I'd like you to discuss this topic further and to see if you can agree on which festivals are most popular with [Wth-s] young people in China and why? During the discussion you may argue with each other or ask each other questions to clarify your points. You will have four and a half minutes for the discussion. Your performance will be judged according to your contribution to the discussion. Remember during the discussion you should try to count the agreement on which festivals [Ws-s] are most popular with Chinese [Ws-s] young people in China. Please give your reasons. </interlocutor>
<sp1> Ok. </sp1>
<sp2> Ah, young people. Mm I think yeah it's the question about young people's opinion, but I still think young people will all like Spring Festival most because [Ws-s] really mm it's a traditional festival for us and since we were young kids we have great fun on that day, so and also we can meet all the families or er relatives and also other friends. And especially now we are all students so we'll on that day we are on the winter vocation, so you can really relax and have fun. So I still think Spring Festival is the is our favorite. What do you think? </sp2>
<sp3> I agree with you. </sp3>
<sp1> Er, excuse me, may I ask a question? Er er that the festivals include the wester- western? </sp1>
<interlocutor> Yes. </interlocutor>
<sp1> Oh, ok, if is true, I think the most popular festival in the young people may be the lover's day, but I forget the </sp1>
<sp2> Oh, Valentine's Day. </sp2>
<sp3> Valentine's Day. </sp3>
<sp1> Yes, Valentine's Day. On the yes I think it's the most popular because [Ws-s] er I think [Wth-s] the topic [Pc-e] is limited by the young people. And as everybody knows young people are a stage [Pg-i] of life. Mm er I I think love is the most most thing for them, so it is the po popular. And on this day many people er er especially the boys er give the rose to his girlfriend and the girls [Ws-s] give her boyfriend chocolate, I think [Wth-s] it's very romantic. </sp1>
<sp3>But I think erm my family is the most important thing to my to me. </sp3>
<sp1> Yes, ok. </sp1>
<sp3> So, I I will choose [Ws-s] the Spring Festival. Because except especially as we are students college students we can go home on the once or twice of a year. So when we at Spring Festival we will very glad to see our parents, our friends, our family. It is very happy for us. Yes. </sp3>
<sp1> Yes. </sp1>
<sp2> I agree the Valentine's Day is quite popular on campus. Many students are quite follow it. Yes but er I I don't know it's quite a difficult decision. </sp2>
<sp1> So er from our three [Wth-s] maybe the festi er the [Wth-z] Spring Festival and the [Wth-z] er the [Wth-z]the lover's day maybe are the both [Wth-s] popular festivals. </sp1>
<sp2> Yes, maybe traditionally speaking </sp2>
<sp1> in the young people. </sp1>
<sp2> We like the Spring Festival. And among western festivals, the Valentine's Day is the most popular one. </sp2>
<sp1> We reach the [Wth-z] agreement. </sp1>
<interlocutor> Ok, now ok, that's the end of the discussion. I'd like to ask you one last question on the topic of festivals [Ws-s] in eastern and western. Ok, ***. </interlocutor>
<sp1> Yes. </sp1>
<interlocutor> Ok, which festival do you think children like most? </interlocutor>
<sp1> Oh, of course [Ps-?], Children's Day. </sp1>
<interlocutor> Why? </interlocutor>
<sp1> Er because it's the festival for them [Wth-z] for them [Wth-z] Er so on on on that day they they er they may er they they sati- they maybe satisfy- er satisfiesed with their parents and teachers. And so they will be very happy that day. So I think they will er love that festival the most. It's my answer. </sp1>
<interlocutor> Ok, do you think the celebration of western festivals should be encouraged in China? </interlocutor>
<sp2> Well, erm to certain extent I think so, but we need a balance. We can not forget all our origin, we cannot forget our traditions. And also we can not feel isolated from the outside world. So I think it's ok to have have fun on western festivals but still need a balance, a ???. Mm well yes as long as people everybody enjoy it I think it's ok. Thank you. </sp2>
<interlocutor> ***. </interlocutor>
<sp3> Mm. </sp3>
<interlocutor> Can you say something about the most unforgettable festival you have ever celebrated? </interlocutor>
<sp3> Yes, I think it's Christmas Day. Yes, last year, er on December the 25th, I mm I joined [Pd-e] er a Christmas yes with many friends. There are many er wonderful [Wo-o] game, won wonderful [Wo-o] games er in our celebration on Christmas Day. I I see man I see I have learn much about Christmas. Then my God my Lord. </sp3>
<sp1> So serious! </sp1>
<sp3> Yes, yes, it gives me much help in my life all the time. </sp3>
<interlocutor> Ok, ok, that's the end the test. Thank you everybody. </interlocutor>
<spall> Thank you. </spall>
