I like swimming and I go to many [Pa-r] parts of China, for example Neimenggu Autonomous Region and south south, for example Hainan province, in the nor- southeast of China. I want to tell you there is very very hot and if you go to there you had better er you shouldn't bring very many clothes [Ph-i] and the scenery is very [Wv-w] very beautiful there. I hope if you have a chance go there, thank you. </sp2>

<interlocutor> OK, now that we know each other, we can do some group work. First of all, I'd like to ask each of you a question. ***, now most families in China have only one child, do you think this will cause any problems? </interlocutor>
<sp1> I don't think so. </sp1>
<interrupted>
<interlocutor> Why not? </interlocutor>
</interrupted>
<sp1> I think one child is hm as now when the family feed a child [Md] is co- very costful and they need much money to to raise him up and to to afford him to go to school, especially now the tuition in the college is very very large, I think it's enough one child. </sp1>
<interlocutor> OK, ***, what kind of family do you come from, a big one or a small one? </interlocutor>
<sp2> A small [Pl-r] one, my family has my family is composed with my father, my mother and I. </sp2>
<interlocutor> And what do you think of it? </interlocutor>
<sp2> Er I think it's good. And first I want to tell you something about you ask her question about one [Ww-v] child. I think different people have different opinions [W2n-ng], and sometimes I think it's very good to have one child because China has a large population and if family has one child can reduce population. </sp2>
<interrupted>
<interlocutor> Please focus on your own question. </interlocutor>
</interrupted>
<sp2> OK, I like my family and I think I am very I am very ? in my home, that means if I have a brother, you know in China we are not very [Wv-w] rich, and you should share my money [Po-r] or something with my brother, but I think something one coin has two coins, if I have a brother or sisters I think I can share my interests and play with her or him. So I think there are both good and both advantages and disadvantages in small [Pl-r] family. </sp2>
<interlocutor> OK, ***, do you think women should stay at home to take care of their children? </interlocutor>
<sp3> No, I don't think so. </sp3>
<interlocutor> Why not? </interlocutor>
<sp3> I think mm because not because they're women they are not have the opportunity to go out. They should go out to have their own their own lives, they could show their ability in their works and they could show their value. Mm maybe sometimes they had to stay home to look after their babies, but I don't think it's all the contents of their lives, I think working made working made a person feel he is needed by the society. So I think women should go to work. </sp3>
<interlocutor> OK now, let's move on to something more specific. The topic for our discussion today is big or small families, each of you will be given a card with two pictures, I'd like you to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of families with one child or many children. You will have one minute to prepare and each of you will have one and a half minutes to give your presentation. Don't worry if I interrupt you when time is up. Now here are your cards. </interlocutor>
<sp3> Thank you. </sp3>
<interlocutor> Now, ***, would you please begin? *** and ***, please put your cards aside and listen to what he has to say. </interlocutor>
<sp2> OK, from the pa- from the first passage [P1a-r] we see there're six child in a family, and from the passage we can conspicuous [W2c-sh] [W1u-er] know mother is very busy, and he should care for his children, and now he is care for his er a baby, and also around there they are very ? a lot of six children er five children play with each other. And the disadvantages [M1d] and disadvantages [S1] is very conspicuous [W2c-sh] [W1u-er], that [Pa-r] means they should share with each er the disadvantage [Pg-d] is they should... mother is busy and children is too many. The disa- the advantage is they can play with each other and they can care for each other. From the second passage we see that there is only one [Ww-v] child in the family, and mother can guide his can guide his child, now in the picture we see the boy is doing her doing his homework, his mother is beside him can give him er guidelines and compare wi- the two passages it is er I don't think it is possible that [Pa-r] in the first passage mother can give every child very carefully care or guidelines [W1i-e] and in the second passage we see er we can see that it is possible and certainly we know. </sp2>
<interlocutor> Sorry, time is up. ***, it's your turn. </interlocutor>
<sp3> Er I think in the first picture there're three children and erm and the family isn't very rich and in the second picture there's a rich family and the parents only have one children. So comparing with the two pictures you can see the advan- advantage of the family only have one children, the parents can give their chil- child a better living conditions and they could focus [Wo-er] on their one child. But in the family with many child maybe the parents mm have limited money and they should share them between the chil- children, so the children have worse living conditions. But I think the children? The family with many child the older one can look after the younger one and that's advantage. So... I think both the family with one child or many children they have. </sp3>
<interrupted>
<interlocutor> Sorry, time is up. ***, it's your turn. </interlocutor>
</interrupted>
<sp1> My picture also consist of two parts, the first part shows the disadvantage of big families. As we can see as I can see the family has four children so the mother is very busy, she has to look after the children, and she has to do the homework, wash er wash rooms or cook meal. But in the secon- second part the family only has one children, so the family has so the mother has her er spare time, she can re- read newspapers or do some other thing. So I think the erm the advantage of small family is very obvious in this this picture, the mother, she I think she as a woman she she is very busy, she has to go out to work herself and she has to do some homework. If the children if she has only one children she can do something she likes, thank you. </sp1>
<interlocutor> OK now, we all have some idea about the advantages and disadvantages of families with one child or many children, and now I'd like you to discuss this topic further and see if you can agree on the ideal size of a family. During the discussion you may argue with each other or ask each other questions to clarify a point. You will have about four and a half minutes for the discussion, your performance will be judged according to your contribution to the discussion. Remember during the discussion you should try to come to an agreement on the ideal size of a family. </interlocutor>
<sp3> First I think a family should have two childrens because er one children is very lonely and mm it's not good for his growing. Erm so I think a family should have two children. </sp3>
<sp1> I know, as I I'm from a small family, too, and I also think that the one mm if the family only has one children, it's sometimes we'll feel lonely. But I think it must base on the econo- economics economic, erm if a family doesn't have too much money they cannot [Mt] afford another children. </sp1>
<sp2> I agree with you and I think mm one ha- one family have two or three children is er is very good. Just like you said [Wai-a:] one children is too lonely and two or three we can care for each other and sometimes when we're lonely we are when we are sad [Wa-a:] we can mm express our feeling to hi- to her or to him. And if we are only one, mm mm you know there's a a gap from parents, so we are when we're growing up we don't want [Ww-v] to express our meaning to our parents. If we have a brother or sister I think the problem will easily solved. </sp2>
<sp3> I think there is er there has a very big population in the world, so especially [Wc-s] in China, one family has one children. But I don't think it's... it's good for the children, so I think in China maybe two is better. </sp3>
<sp1> Yes, as we we can know that in other in developed countries, many couples don't like don't want to to have baby babies, the government even afford money to to to ask them to to have babies. But I think that is impossible in ? time in China, that China has too many people. </sp1>
<sp2> Yes, I agree with you, I think it is a paradox that [Pa-r] whether we have one or two or three children, because China has as you said [Wai-a:] China has a very large population, you can't dedu- indu- deduce them at very quickly er very quick time. I want to say er...... two children is is the best thing because just as you say we can care for care each other and certainly as you said [Wai-a:] in some developed country young couple don't want to have chil- want [Ww-v] to have a child, I think in China some pe- in China now many people also don't want to have a child. </sp2>
<sp3> Especially in the cities. </sp3>
<interrupted>
<sp1> In some more developed cities, ?? high-income people </sp1>
</interrupted>
<sp2> But in the rural they but in the rural they er also want to have many children especially a boy. </sp2>
<sp1> Yes. </sp1>
<sp2> It's superstitious, they're superstitious, I think. It comes from an ancient [M1n] in China because in the ancient [M1n] we also want to have many children and especially a boy. </sp2>
<sp3> Yeah. Because children means...... </sp3>
<interrupted>
<sp2> force? </sp2>
</interrupted>
<sp3> In the countries children means power, the labor. </sp3>
<sp2> Yeah. </sp2>
<sp3> To do their work in the homes. </sp3>
<interrupted>
<sp1>They need many, many people many hands to to to work [Wo-o:].</sp1>
</interrupted>
<sp2> Yes, because we're agricultural agricultural family. </sp2>
<sp1> As I come I came from Xiamen, it's very near the Taiwan, I have some classmates, they came from Taiwan. Erm I found many Taiwan families they have two or three children. They like to have so many children, and the they are their incomes are higher than that in the mainland of China, some parts, so they can affor- they can afford to. I think they are very happy, they have brothers and sisters, they can play together and and say something together. </sp1>
<sp2> OK, it's really wonderful to have an experience of that [Pa-r]. </sp2>
<interlocutor> OK, that's the end of the discussion, now I'd like to ask you just one last question on the topic of big or small families. ***, do you think young people would like to live with their parents after they married? </interlocutor>
<sp1> I think in nowadays most young people want to live alone, it's I think it's they can gain much freedom, they don't want to we are living we are live with our parents for a long time when we are when we growing up, so we want to sometimes we want to live just ourselves and do something we want, thank you. </sp1>
<interlocutor> OK, ***, do you think young people should take care of their parents? </interlocutor>
<sp2> Yes, I think so, because it is our conventional [Wv-w] moral and our parents bring me bring us [Pu-r] up and we should take care of them when they are old. Er I think if everybody can do that [Pa-r] the this country will [Ww-v] more will have more prospect. And I think I think everybody should everybody should take care of their parents when they are old, in our pers- in my perspective when I am old I certainly want my children take care of me, that's OK, thank you. </sp2>
<interlocutor> OK, ***, do you think young people like to have children as soon as they get married? </interlocutor>
<sp3> No, I don't think so. </sp3>
<interlocutor> Why not? </interlocutor>
<sp3> I think young people after they get married they want to save money for... for their children, maybe because having a baby means responsibility. And maybe they have their own... jobs, they want to further their ability in their jobs. So I think having baby in the early times of their marriage isn't isn't very good to their erm to their future, so I think they want to wait wait for a good chance and wait for better living conditions and then they will have baby. That's all. </sp3>
<interlocutor> OK, this is the end of the test, thank you, everybody. </interlocutor>
<spall> Thank you. </spall>
