I think I am a not bad player, but and and just after this test er I am going to Qinghua university for a tennis match. I hope can win the game. So er and I like music a lot, especially some other-type music, rock and roll, hip-hop, rap, so that's my favorite music. So </sp3>

<sp1> My university life? </sp1>
<interlocutor> Yes. </interlocutor>
<sp1> Oh, I think er say erm I want to tell me something about my spare time. Erm you know er it's really a tough question. Er university life, yes, the most interesting is that during the first year and second year, er all the students in our university you have enough spare time, so you can do a lot of things er in my university. Er if you like er sports, ok, you can go play tennis [S2] and you can play basketball er or football. It's really very convenient to play all of these games. And if you are really a hard-working student, you can you have enough time to attend the training classes, to prepare for TOEFL, your TSE or GRE, who knows? You choose [Ws-s]. Erm yes I think erm it's kind of interesting in our university. </sp1>
<interlocutor> Ok, thank you. </interlocutor>
<sp1> Thank you. </sp1>
<interlocutor> Er, ***, have you been involved in student in student union activities? </interlocutor>
<sp2> Yeah. </sp2>
<interlocutor> Yes, er please say something about a-activities?<interlocutor>
<sp2> Erm I was a member of students union before, er actually in my first year of university, and I believe it's really helpful to erm to prove my a-a-ability to erm communicate with others, actually in my new student classmates in university. and when I was in the erm students union, I should do a lot of work with the other members and con and communicating with the [We-i] teachers and the [We-i] professors maybe er such as preparing a er maybe lecture for the [We-i] professor and and organize a student activity, erm and erm I really I am proud proud of one of the activity is the famous lecture, that is made of made by a famous professor in Beijing and and we did a lot of work about it. So I think it's very helpful to my er to improve my acti-ability and and can make my university life quite interesting and colorful. </sp2>
<interlocutor> Ok, thank you. ***, er how do you like be the university student? </interlocutor>
<sp3> Very much. </sp3>
<interlocutor> How? </interlocutor>
<sp3> Er, for example, I I pay lots of attention to my academic er records, so in the university life, I think [Pk-er] you can learn everything you want to many ways, to libraries so there are many er references you can refer to er in universities, you can learn everything you can here. And secondly, I can I can erm express myself as a great leader. Because I am I think I am a man with great leadership. Erm luckily I was chosen to be the captain of the er national national flag er guard of our university, that's a that's great honor to me. So every everyday we 15 people, 15 soldiers, we walk down the main building main walk down those stairs of our main buildings and to raise [Ws-s] our respectful national flag. I think that's a really great honor to me .So I think [Pk-er] to many ways, I can enjoy my university lives. </sp3>
<interlocutor> Ok, thank you. Now let's move on to something more specific. The topic for discussion today is student activities. Now each of you will be given a card with four pictures showing different activities. I'd like you to give a brief description of each picture and then make some comments on it. You have one minute to prepare and each of you will have one and a half minutes to give your presentation. Don't worry if I interrupt you when time is up. Here now here are your cards. </interlocutor>
<interlocutor> Right, ***, would you please begin? </interlocutor>
<sp3> Sure. </sp3>
<interlocutor> So, *** and ***, please put your cards aside. Now let's listen to what *** has to say. </interlocutor>
<sp3> Right, in the first picture, er a boy is pushing a wheel chair that a grandmother sitting on that and this er Excuse me, not a grandmother but a disabled people, person. I think [Pk-er] this is a very er kind er kind-hearted activity. This is very necessary to the society. And se-second picture a boy was mend was mending a er er radio. I think [Pk-er] this work requires a very specific special specialization technique, so not everyone can do this, but this is very helpful to other people. Erm in the third picture, this is a volunteer and the u-university games. For me, I don't like this job. I don't know why but er I think most of time volunteers in university games waste their times. That's my that's that's my comment. And the last picture a boy was er helping the olds, helping the ages. He she he was coming in the window and the girl was reading a newspapers for the grandmothers. I think, for me, I will choose [Ws-s] this among the four, I will choose [Ws-s] this job to do. I think this is er traditional Chinese virtue. So I respect this very much. </sp3>
<interlocutor> Erm, thank you. ***, now it's your turn. </interlocutor>
<sp2> Ok, er my picture is about social practice. The first is about market survey. In the picture, a boy is in the street and doing a survey about maybe about some er ad-advertisement [Mti]. And I think it's really a good job and it can improve your ability. In the second is a tutor [Wt-n], in the picture, a boy is teaching this little girl in her house. And erm nowadays, many many union students doing this are doing this job. It's really really er can make money easy. And the second the third is about a student union college students going er going going to into the countryside and teach the er villagers how to how to plant things more scientifically, so it is really helpful to the farmers actually. And fourth is about the ??? er girls, a girl is joining the customers [Mto] how to how to see how to understand maybe understand this this ??? and show show them around to to make the ??? more better, much better. And that's all. </sp2>
<interlocutor> Thank you. </interlocutor>
<sp1> Thank you. Erm erm these four pictures about activities ??? or about students union. The first picture is er about English Corner. Erm you know, students er Chinese er and foreign students they come together and you know it's a good opportunity for the Chinese students to practice oral English, also give a a a good opportunity for them to exchange their ideas. I think [Wth-s] this is kind of good activity. The second is er er weekend ball, I call this. And you know nowadays erm students are very ??? and they are always energetic er even enthusiastic and they can dance together and get to know each other to fulfill their spare time. And third one it's I call it's a picture club. Er it's er it it provide the students the [We-er] opportunity to to see the pictures and enjoy the scene er demonstrate demonstrating in in the pictures. And fourth I would like this is the activity that I love most. It's about er competition. It's er actually er speaking competition. And students from different universities and they competes together to all they try to to defeats the other side. I think erm students can benefits a lots of this. I will concentrate on this picture because I would say I have benefit a lot from this kind of activity. Er the first time I get to know this kind of thing is last year, when I my chance I ??? ??? about the speaking competition held by China Daily 21st century er in 1998. Erm it's about east and west ??? in two cultures. And I would say I was ??? the shots. I don't know students can speak er such er flu-fluent and demonstrate their idea so fluent </sp1>
<interrupted>
<interlocutor> I have to interrupt you here. </interlocutor>
</interrupted>
<sp1> Yes, thank you. </sp1>
<interlocutor> Now er now we all have some idea of the various kinds of student activities. I'd like you to discuss this topic further and see if you can agree on why such activities are beneficial to college students. During the discussion, you may argue with each other or ask each other questions to clarify a point. You'll have about four and a half minutes for the discussion. Your performance will be judged according to your contribution to the discussion. Remember during the discussion you try to come to an agreement on why students can benefit from taking part in student activities. Now you can begin. </interlocutor>
<sp1> ??? Er that I would like to say that students can benefit a lot from this kind of activity. Er because you know nowadays when you just er concentrate on your you know your study. The times has have past. Er you know when no matter, when you want to find the job right [Mt] after your graduation, or you want to go to go abroad to pursue a doctor's degree or master's degree, you really er have to join such kind of activities. And you have to prove them your resume to show that you are re-really activity active [Mc] students in your er university, and you the most important, you can erm contribute to the pro-perspective university or your perspective boss or company. I think this's really beneficial. </sp1>
<sp2> I'll say something </sp2>
<interrupted>
<sp1> what's about you? </sp1>
</interrupted>
<sp2> About the competition. Erm actually nowadays many a lot of university students went to went to be take went to take part in competition and erm actually the sense of competition, the sense of er self-fulfillment is really judged by is are really judged by them, actually judged by male also, and they take part in in this contest or competition to improve their oral English or their abilities in other in other parts of the erm s-study. And I I it can really benefit be we can really benefit a lot from the competition. </sp2>
<sp3> I have to argue. Er just as just as I mentioned before I pay higher attention to academic records, so I think [Pk-er] during my er for a college student what comes first is study. Because er during a man's life period, man man's life cut several period, if you cross one period to another, you have to go back to do the things you have to do when you when you when you just passed er later in your other life period, so I think [Pk-er] appropriate er activities is necessary but I think erm maybe academic records are more important. So so activity and academic records they are strike, they are often always striking. So er not everyone not everyone but some very ta-talent people can solve this er striking pretty well. So I think [Pk-er] activities are are pretty annoyed. </sp3>
<sp2> In a way he is right, but I think er the most important is how you how you use the time. If you use it more scientifically, I think you can you can connect the time of study and students activities. It really can you can really benefit a lot if you try to, you you can save the time and also benefit a lot from the activities. </sp2>
<sp1> I I think I do agree with Miss ***. </sp1>
<sp2> Yeah. </sp2>
<sp1> Erm I I think study and activity are not er do not conflict, I think er they can erm com-complete each other con-com-complement each other. And I would say I I've benefit a lot from the activity and of course I I can say I am the top students in in my class, even in my grade. And now I am preparing for the GRE, but erm I I also do a lot of er acti-activities organized by the students union. And I think after this activity, I can understanding the reading materials ??? very clearly, I can er have a very er er you know I can erm erm study very efficiency efficiency, so </sp2>
<sp3> Let me ??? an example. I have a I have a student brother who is who is from the same middle school as I and he was a Qinghua university student, but he quit when he when he was in his senior year. And maybe you guys know he was fond of fans of network, but erm he was ambitious but his his company grow open up and one day ??? everything is over, all his business is over because he he was not a good business man. And at the same time, he quit his study, he lose the chance to go on his academic the study as well, so I think [Pk-er] you have to think think over, you have to think well before you er choose the alternatives between the study and activities. </sp3>
<sp2> And I think in this way, he he must he must learn a lesson, he have a lesson. </sp2>
<sp3> Sure. </sp3>
<sp2> That's er that's that's a point. </sp2>
<sp1> Erm if you don't mind I will draw [Wa-u] our discussion to er to a conclusion. I think from this we can say that not all the students nowadays are agree er with the saying that ac-activities are are beneficial. I think we have differ-different er way of thinking. Some students just like Mr. *** he think er acti-activity er do erm erm the [We-e] activities do you know do erm do harm, I have to say, to your academic studies, but Miss *** and and me er both think that er activities are beneficial and most importantly erm they they do not [Mt] conflict with ourselves. </sp1>
<interlocutor> Thank you. That's the end of our er er discussion. Erm ***, I'd like to ask you one last question, ok? </interlocutor>
<sp2> Ok. </sp2>
<interlocutor> Now, er let's see erm do you think you parents would encourage you to take part in student activities? </interlocutor>
<sp2> Yes, they agree with me. They think they I can benefit a lot during during this social practice or volunteer activities or something like that. And when I take part in the [We-i] students union, they agree that you can you should or you should [Md] they say I should take part in in it that. If I someday I will going to the so-society and the ability during if [Wf-v] if [Wf-v] I I am reading our study all the day, the ability is not not mine, so I should should er take the take this opportunity to improve my ability of social socie-social communication. </sp2>
<interlocutor> Ok, thank you. </interlocutor>
<sp2> Yes, about his. </sp2>
<interlocutor> ***, erm do you know anything about student activities in universities abroad? </interlocutor>
<sp3> Er sure a little bit. Because I think I sent Canada with an exchange program and I join some er student activities er taken place there. They have a er freshman-incoming-welcome party every year er because er to make it more vivid [Md] like the grade-nine students they are pretty young, the youngest in the high school, when they come to a new school, so the student union will hold a party to welcome them, they do barbecue, you know barbecue? And the they make everything very very nice to to make the whole school like a family. And all the students like like old friends. I think that's pretty enjoyable and er the most different er er distin-distinction er between China and Canada er students have many sports activities, that's what I like most and they have a very nice ???, gyms, playgrounds, and football court, so er that's what w-w-we can not expect to have. So er I think [Pk-er] foreign students are better in organizing university er er organizing student activities but maybe worse than Chinese students in in academic. </sp3>
<interlocutor> Ok, thank you. That's the end of our test. Thank you. Goodbye. </interlocutor>
<spall> Goodbye. </spall>
