<interlocutor> Good afternoon, everybody. </interlocutor>
<spall> Good afternoon, teacher. </spall>
<interlocutor> Could you please tell me your name and number of your admission ticket? </interlocutor>
<sp1> Yeah. </sp1>
<interrupted>
<interlocutor> Your name? </interlocutor>
</interrupted>
<sp1> My name is ***. And my admi- admission ticket is 0172. </sp1>
<interlocutor> OK, and? </interlocutor>
<sp2> My name is *** and my number is er 1, 0179. </sp2>
<sp3> My name is ***. My number is 0186. </sp3>
<interlocutor> Uh-huh, thank you. Now would you please briefly introduce yourselves to each other? Remember, you shouldn't mention the name of your university. </interlocutor>
<sp1> Yeah, my name is *** and my major is pharmacology. I have studied in medical university for 3 years. Er I have a lot of hobbies, like erm swimming, skating and reading books, watching TV and so on. </sp1>
<interlocutor> uh, thank you. </interlocutor>
<sp2> Er, my name is *** and my major is electronic engineering. And so I had a hard work. Er I have to study until midnight every [W1e-ae] day. Er but I have a lot of interest, er such as music. I like all kind of music. Er and I have some interest in the Chinese tradition handwriting and painting. And that's all. </sp2>
<sp3> And my name is *** and my major is Chinese. During my spare [Ware-aier] spare time, I always listening to music and watching films er which is produced er in the foreign abroad. </sp3>
<interrupted>
<interlocutor> Uh-huh. </interlocutor>
</interrupted>
<sp3> And during my spare time, I always play some sports play badminton and something else. I like swimming very much. Maybe this is because I come from south of China. That's all. </sp3>
<interlocutor> Thank you. Now that we know each other, we can do some group work. First of all, I'd like to ask each of you to say something about scientific inventions. Now ***, do you think scientific inventions have made our life easier and more comfortable than before? </interlocutor>
<sp1> Yeah, I think so, mm. </sp1>
<interrupted>
<interlocutor> Could you please give us some examples? </interlocutor>
</interrupted>
<sp1> Yeah, for example, erm erm thanks to the er telephone invention, er we can communicate with each other in different, er maybe in different countries [Wou-ae], and long distance. Mm erm if I have a friend in other country [Wou-ae], er I can communicate with her always er telephone easily, yeah, I think so. </sp1>
<interlocutor> That's all. Now thank you, ***, is the use of computers popular among university students nowadays? </interlocutor>
<sp2> Er yes, very popular. </sp2>
<interrupted>
<interlocutor> Why? Why? </interlocutor>
</interrupted>
<sp2> Er because we can get informations online. And as on school need more information, as so on on students must surf online to get this information. But er and computer is very convenient, er it's faster than the newspaper and also on the magazines, such an example. er so er as our in my department, er nearly every [W1e-ae] dormitory has a te- has a computer in the dormitory. And so er we also do er some experiment use some software, so I think computer helped us a lot. </sp2>
<interlocutor> OK, thank you. ***, some people say that the computer is the most important invention of the last century, do you agree? </interlocutor>
<sp3> I can't agree. </sp3>
<interlocutor> Why? </interlocutor>
<sp3> Because I think the computer has bring us the most advanced things, that is internet. People always look on internet, for communication, for searching the information about their work. I think that has helped us much. For the student, take communication, for example, er children always look on the internet by some chatting program such as OICQ. They use this program, they use this software [S2] to communicate. And this has brought the communication become more easier than by through the telephone or something else, some other kind of communication ways. And for the scientist, the the advancement things much more obvious [S2]. I think the most of the scientist always search on the internet to make them keep trace with the erm development of the the science field. That's all. </sp3>
<interlocutor> Thank you. Now let's move on to something more specific. The topic for our discussion today is the use of computers. Each of you will be given a card concerning the use of computers for different purposes. I'd like you to talk about the benefits and problems of using computers according to your card. You have one minute to prepare and each of you will have one and a half minutes to give your presentation. Don't worry if I interrupt you when time is up. Now here are your cards. Yours, yours, yours. </interlocutor>
<interlocutor> Now, ***, would you please begin? *** and ***, please put your cards aside and listen to what *** has to say. </interlocutor>
<sp1> Er at first, I want to say some advantages about er seeing the VCD and CD on the computer. Mm I think first, it is become more convenient for the people to see the movies and listening to music through the computer. And another advantage is that you can download some films and music from the internet without paying for it. This is the advantage I think. But for the disadvantage, maybe it is that it will mm destroy your CD ROM [Wo-u] I think. Er but maybe this disa-disadvantage compared with the advantage is so small. Er judging by the playing ca, playing games on the computer, I think I'm not agree with it. And some people always say that this is, there are some advantages in it, because you can look on the internet and think it with different people from different countries. And it is an eye-opener, someone say like that. But I don't think so, I just think playing games maybe a waste of time, and though sometimes it will give you, er it will help you to relax yourselves, but once you have dropped in it, you can't rescue yourselve, I think sometimes. I just see the films all day and can't mm get out from it. And some in some degree, er you can always say that if you er always absorbed in the mo-games, you can't come to the reality. You just think about the games the the figures in the game. I think this is disadvantage of it. But in a word, I think computer have helped us much more in the in the last century and I think that the it will also developed in this century. People will make more changes and judging by the disadvantage that it brought to us. </sp1>
<interrupted>
<interlocutor> Sorry, I have to interrupt you here. Thank you. </interlocutor>
</interrupted>
<sp3> I am sorry. OK. </sp3>
<Interlocutor> Now, it's your turn, ***. </Interlocutor>
<sp2> I think computer has helped us a lot in my study. Because my major is electronic engineering, so I have contact [S2] many lessons [We-ae] and bought it, such as Microsoft series [M2s]. And I think computer er helped us first er helped us a lot in learning English first</sp2>
<interrupted>
<interlocutor> OK, ***, you have to focus on something written on your card. </interlocutor>
</interrupted>
<sp2> Yeah. Er first er as to the study of English, mm computer helped us a lot because er as in in my dormitory, the computer had software named as Oriented Express [W2e-ae] Train and it can translate er some idioms or some words into English very easily. So I think er also computer help us in erm studying my major, because er as in our department, er we need a lot of software to use, er such as the Matlab er Mathematics [Ms] so er with all computer, we can't use this er ex- experiment software to stimulate [M1t] [Pi-tu:] stimulate the experiment result. Er and also I think computer has some disadvantages. Er because when we use the software, we don't have the teacher to conduct us, and er as we we use the computer individually, so we don't have the con-connection er communication between our students, so we must solve the problem my on our own. Er it is hard because er with all this communication, we just think just can't understand software and also er computers er have other disadvantages, because as we also download some er software from the internet, but it has some er problems because er these software have copyright, but we use it as a free, so we think, as a college student, we shouldn't do this, but I think to our department, we need this software but we can't afford it. It's very expensive er on the market, about one thousand yuan. So I think our teacher told us that you can use the software but don't tell anyone when you download on the internet. So er I think er computer er in my dormitory er helped us a lot in any everyday [W1e-ae] life. When we bought a computer ever from the er er Grade One. </sp2>
<interrupted>
<interlocutor> OK. I have to interrupt you here. Thank you, ***. Now, it's your turn. </interlocutor>
</interrupted>
<sp1> Yeah, when it comes to my opinion on this prob- on this topic, I think erm the there are many advantages in using computer in every day of our life. And the first is mm seeing something in on internet er it er brings us er very er many convenient. Er we can see mm we can see many many useful and can hear the mm of what we need in compu-, er in internet through internet and er for free. Er for example, er if we need if I need something er of er my major er I need to seek some knowledge er in from college er but er they will be some er com- company er abroad, er I can't get it mm through letters or or something that for for many as for many er I I think mm using computer will will make me very very convenient. Er for second, er we can er exchange our opinions through emails. Er er through emails er I can make a lot of er different friends er from different countries, and that broaden my horizons [S1] [Wzon-di]. And mm but I still think er there also a lot of disadvantages on this er in using computers. Erm maybe mm erm some teenagers [S2] cannot control himself very much er er will be er immerge in the in chatting in chatting with emails er with his mm email friends er that will be spend that will be take him too much time and too much money. Mm. </sp1>
<interrupted>
<interlocutor> I am sorry, ***, after er I have to interrupt you. </interlocutor>
</interrupted>
<sp1> Yeah, OK. </sp1>
<interlocutor> Part, now we all have some idea of benefits and problems involved in the use of the computers. I'd like you to discuss this topic further and see if you can agree on what is the greatest contribution of the computer and what's the most serious problem brought about by its use. During the discussion you may argue with each other or ask each other questions to clarify a point. You have about four and a half minutes for the discussion. Your performance will be judged according to your contribution to the discussion. Remember, during the discussion, you should try to come to an agreement on what is the greatest contribution of the computer and what is the most serious problem brought about by its misuse. Now, please start. </interlocutor>
<sp3> I think the greatest contribution that the computer brought to us is that it had it made it convenient for us to search the information and and covered almost all the range of the field I think. And I I think that maybe you have more much more feelings than me because you your major is medicine and your major is er electr-. </sp3>
<interrupted>
<sp1> Electronic engineering. </sp1>
</interrupted>
<sp3> Yes and you need to search for more information that is new. </sp3>
<interrupted>
<sp2> Yeah, yeah. </sp2>
</interrupted>
<sp3> That is related to your major, so I think maybe you may have more feelings about its use. </sp3>
<sp2> Yeah, I agree with you, because er I just now talked talked to a student, er he from my school, and he told me that in the Da Lian air crash, yeah he happened be on the spot, so er he he then surfed on the internet, it just about twenty minutes after the internet has er ??? the news. So I think the information is very fast. </sp2>
<sp1> Yeah, I agree more. And for example, er at ??? I have to search something related er in er in my major and I have to searched it in very [Wv-w] er short time, I have only a short period of time to search to find it, so I mm I give my I give all my time to the computer. From internet, I searched a lot of er world [Md] address [Wdd-g], world address in the computer and mm very easily I find what I need. </sp1>
<sp3> Yes, so do I. Though my major is Chinese, but I also need to search information about some literatures in Chinese or in other languages. And I think that because I cannot afford to buy so so many books and you you know that some books, er when you had read [Wea-i] it, they will mm out of use I think sometimes, so it's really waste of money but if you searched on internet, you just er log on the download something and you can change it just by yourself, I think it's really a good way, it's er not only convenient but also can save money I think. </sp3>
<sp2> Yeah, so in my opinion, the greatest contribution is the emergence of the internet. But if you just have the computer without internet, you will only do some little things, but er if you surf surf online, you will be connected with other people all of the world. </sp2>
<sp3> Yeah, if you just er if you can't log on the internet, you can just type the things through it, then the computer cannot be used well, I think. </sp3>
<interrupted>
<sp2> Yeah, yeah, yeah. </sp2>
</interrupted>
<sp3> It's waste of it. But how do you think about the er bad effect [Mt] [Pt-shern] that it brought to us. </sp3>
<sp2> I think is the games. </sp2>
<sp3> Games? </sp3>
<sp1> Yeah, I think there will be some problems brought by the er emails or OICQ. </sp1>
<sp3> Yeah, I agree with you. </sp3>
<sp1> Teenagers cannot control them very well. They may emerged [Wg-d] themselves in chatting with er his his or her emails friends and they'll er meet each other after the chatting on computer and they may do something not good. </sp1>
<sp3> In fact, I have that experience. </sp3>
<interrupted>
<sp1> Yeah? </sp1>
</interrupted>
<sp3> Yes, when I was a freshman, I just feel lonely in my school because I came far away, I come from Yunnan province, so when I er settle in Beijing, I just think that I have so few friend, so I log on the internet and chat with the friends. I found that I can trust them very much, so I tell them all the things. But then I find mm in sometimes I have the feeling that I just mm involved in the internet and I can't come back to the reality. This very dangerous I think. I just try to help myself I my stu friend to help me er I tell them please telephone me more and give me more letters [W1e-ae]. In that case, I can come to the reality again. </sp3>
<sp1> Yeah, yeah. </sp1>
<sp2> It's a problem for girls. But as for boys, because I have been the monitor for class, so I knows the boys can't er can't get them out of </sp2>
<interrupted>
<sp3> Out of themselves. </sp3>
</interrupted>
<sp2> Yeah of the games. It just er seemed as if that they have been all day long playing games, just they don't go in to the classroom and don't do the homework and just all all all class has been er the last one in the department. I think it's a very big problem, so I have talked to them er to persuade them to drop the games. But they don't just don't listen to me. It's very attractive. </sp2>
<sp1> Yeah, yeah, they can't control themselves very well. So mm I also have a example. At in my class, er there also er my classmate er who is very [Wv-w] who is so interes- </sp1>
<interrupted>
<sp3> Interested in game. </sp3>
</interrupted>
<sp1> Interested in games and can't pass the exam, so he ??? yeah. </sp1>
<interlocutor> All right, all right, ok I think it's enough. It's the end of the discussion and also the end of the test. </interlocutor>
<spall> Thank you, teacher. </spall>
