When people ask me how many languages I speak, I say, " I speak English very well." But then, why shouldn't I speak English very well, since I am a native speaker of English? At the same time, I have very little ear for or ability to learn Chinese, beyond a very few basic words. For me, learning Chinese, Japanese, or Korean would seem to be a very large task, especially since these languages have thousands of ideographic characters to memorize.
English has only 26 letters, 10 numbers, and a dozen or so punctuation marks that we have to learn. However, as are most contemporary languages that are changing all the time, and always adding new vocabulary and idioms, English is very difficult for nonnative speakers to learn to read, write, speak, and comprehend. English has a Germanic language structure and mostly a Romance language vocabulary. It would seem natural that learning English would be easier for those with European languages as their first language than for those whose first language is ideographic in nature.
Chinese learners of English frequently ask me what are the best ways to develop English abilities. It's a slow process. I recommend that you read as much as possible in English, including the Chinese youth oriented weekly newspaper, "Twenty First Century. " I also suggest that you listen to the BBC or Voice of America on short wave radio as often as possible, or other English language programs on Chinese radio. If you have access to television regularly, watch CCTV Channel 9, the international and English language station as much as possible other programs in English. You should watch as many English language movies or videos as possible, even with subtitles. You can involve yourselves in English corner or clubs, and can compete in English language speaking or declamation contests. It's wise for you to have friends with reasonable abilities in English with whom you can talk regularly in English, or even better to become friends with native speakers or international teachers who speak regularly in English. You should write a journal several times weekly in English, and use dictionaries to add various new vocabulary words.
All of these continuing efforts will eventually help you to increase your knowledge and abilities in English. Then, you can also say, when asked by others, "I speak English very well!"
