"You look like a very intelligent young woman."
"Oh, thank you. I like to think that I am smart. I received the highest marks in my university classes."
"Congratulations. But, then why are you smoking?"
"What? My smoking is no business of yours. Everyone smokes. But out of my business, buddy!"
"I'm sorry. I just don't think that a bright young woman like you should be smoking. Besides, you look like you are pregnant. When will the baby be due? How long have you smoked? Are you sure that everyone smokes? I don't smoke."
"Why do you care if I smoke? It's my body and I can do as I please."
"That may be true, that it's your body, but I said you look like you may be pregnant. If that is true, don't you have a responsibility to your baby not to smoke? Why do you think that our cigarettes in the US have a warning label on each package, which sometimes warns pregnant women away from smoking because it may endanger the health of their baby?"
"Well, yes, I am expecting a baby. I know about the warning labels, and sometimes it makes me stop and think about problems I might cause my baby. I don't think I can quit. I have been doing it too long. To tell the truth, I also know that it isn't too good for my own health, either. I have tried to quit, but it's useless. I always start smoking again after a few days. Do you really think that it will be harmful to me or to my baby?"
"To be honest, there are millions of people every year who are dying from tobacco related illnesses. Even second hand smoke can be dangerous to our health. Second hand smoke is when someone else close by gets a health problem because of your smoking. Would you want to have your baby born and put a lighted cigarette in his or her mouth right after birth?"
"If I am smoking, why would my smoking cause health problems for someone else who is near me? Certainly I would not put a lighted cigarette in my baby's mouth. I don't want my child to smoke, ever!"
"If I am in a small room with you or an auto and you are smoking, then it's like putting a lighted cigarette in my mouth too. I' m glad that you don't want your child to be affected negatively by your smoking. That's good. Then, why don't you stop smoking yourself and show how bright you are for you and for your future child?"
"I'd like to, but it's so hard. I'll just finish this last pack of cigarettes, and then I will stop."
"Oh, yeah, sure you will. You are kidding yourself. Good luck to your baby, the future smoker!"
