In the United States the biggest holiday is Christmas. It is a time when families gather together, exchange presents and sing carols. Traditionally a tree is decorated and gifts are bought for family and friends.
In my family we usually attend a candlelight service at church on Christmas Eve. We then gather at my grandparents home and eat a big dinner, exchange presents, and visit with relatives we do not see often. Sometimes Santa will visit and give presents out to the younger children. On Christmas morning I exchange presents with my parents and then my dad and I go visit my younger cousins to see what Santa has brought. That night we generally have a big dinner with our extended family.
Though these traditions are enjoyable, I feel that Christmas has become too commercial. It has reached the point where the presents are the main focus of the holiday season, not time spent with loved ones. Instead of buying presents for particular people, it would be nice to plan to spend some quality time with that person. Also, instead of buying needless things for people, spend that money on food and gifts for underprivileged families. By taking the focus off material things and placing it on relationships, we can bring hack the true spirit of Christmas.
