Handicapped people should have equal rights and access as others in society. People fail to realize that the steps they easily walk up every day pose a serious challenge for some. In addition to stairs, the handicapped need a ramp. They also need lower counters, wider doorways, and ways to automatically open doors.
When constructing a building one should be mindful of these differences. Though seemingly insignificant, they can have a huge impact. Also, when in places where handicapped facilities are not available, be mindful and offer assistance should anyone need it.
The government has passed many laws regarding rights for the handicapped. All buildings must now be handicapped accessible. Though the basic changes, such as access to a building, are now mandatory, many of the smaller details are at the discretion of the owner. The government must continue to enforce existing laws but also must research current problems and enforce new ones.
