Do you live to eat or do you eat to live? Do you live to work or work to live? Both questions are important. In my personal life, I have tried to answer each question by adapting the second part of the question for myself, which is eating to live and working to live. However, of course, it is often tempting to follow only the first part of the question, by finding myself living to eat by going to eat all you can eat" buffet restaurants and living to work, by spending many more hours than necessary or useful in work related projects. We have terms in the United States where these groups of people are called, "overeaters," and "workaholics.
There is also a less familiar saying in the United States that we should live simply so that other might simply live." As a matter of social justice, should we not live reasonably simple lives? Should we eat simply and work so that we have more wealth than we could ever use? Should we always remember that our excesses may cause others to live poorer lives? Still, it's not always an easy path to follow. For a balanced life, we should try to eat enough nutritious food to sustain our good health, and work enough to live a reasonably good life. However we should also avoid eating excessively just for the purpose of eating, or working so much that we have no time for other important features of our life. Let us also lead lives, both as we eat to live and work to live, that also make room for others to live their own best lives.
