Spoken words ate not the only way people convey their message. Perhaps an even more important aspect of communication is body language. Unlike words, which can be untruthful, body language rarely lies. Because it is subconscious, it generally expresses how one actually feels. Most people are not aware of their body language; however, others subconsciously read it in all situations. Using the correct body language, along with words, greatly increases the chance that one's message will be heard accurately.
Foreign students often find themselves relying heavily on body language. Since their knowledge of the spoken language is limited, they must use body language to convey a large part of their message. Also breaking the norms in a new country, such as standing too close to a person, causes foreign students to have a more difficult time adapting. Knowing the rules for personal space and general body language will go a long way in making the transition to a new culture easier.
