Vegetation in cities is diminishing. Sleek new buildings are taking the place of what used to be untouched land. Vast spaces of green are becoming harder and harder to find, and the residents are paying the price.
The aesthetic value of a twenty million-dollar building is not nearly as pleasing as that of lush, green landscape. Not only does vegetation provide a visually pleasing environment, it also makes the air cleaner and provides a sense of peacefulness. Trees also provide shade and keep the sun's draining rays off people, allowing them to fully enjoy their time outdoors.
City planners must take the decreasing amount of vegetation into consideration. Trees and plants should be planted wherever possible, and the construction of new buildings should be carefully monitored. One city that is doing something about this problem is Chicago. For every building constructed over a certain size, a park area must also be constructed. Steps like these will ensure that vegetation is always present, even in the city.
