One of the most important aspects of life is good health. Good health minimizes suffering and discomfort, while it maximizes ability to work and enjoy life. Indeed, it is nearly impossible to get pleasure from life if one's health is bad.
In both China and America, people are trying to be healthy. Elderly people in Yangzhou can be seen practicing Taijiquan in the morning. Middle-aged people jog after work in Atlanta. American youth favor football, baseball, and hockey, while their Chinese counterparts prefer soccer and ping-pong. They both enjoy basketball.
In addition to physical health, mental health should not be neglected. Confidence is vital to success and happiness, while insecurity and various complexes (i. e. , inferiority complexes) should be banished from the psyche and soma. Regarding mental health, one should seek to cultivate confidence, bravery, and a good self-image. However, one should avoid becoming arrogant, foolhardy, or unnecessarily aggressive.
Since, to Descartez' s dismay, the mind is not really separate from the body, physical and mental health can be developed together. In this respect, the Chinese are far ahead of the Americans, in that arts such as Taijiquan and Qigong benefit both physical and mental health.
Taking measures to remain healthy can prolong and add quality to life. Neglecting health can result in serious consequences including illness. Maintaining and improving health should be a priority for everyone.
