The development of good study habits translates into academic success and enjoyment, while poor study habits mean frustration and low grades. Cultivating good study habits should be a prime goal for every student.
There exist it number of tried-and-true methods for developing good study habits. The first is attitude. Students should view their school obligations as the most important aspect of their lives, all other things being secondary. Second, students need to discipline themselves against distractions. Most people are intrinsically lazy, and distractions such as television abound. Such distractions are dangerous and can potentially ruin students' chances of success. Third, students must learn proper time management. Procrastination is a prime enemy of good study habits, as intense studying in compressed time frames (cramming) is ineffective for learning. Lastly, students should utilize all senses when studying (sight, sound, texture, smell, taste). This has been proven to be of great use, particularly for long-term knowledge retention.
Additionally, students should not forget each other. Study groups can be fun and motivating, while allowing exchange of opinions, ideas, and facts. However, such groups need to remain focused on the task at hand to avoid digression into irrelevant matters.
With the right combination of desire and attitude, students will develop good study habits. Good study habits mean scholastic success, which in turn will support students for their entire lives.
