<Topic>Bicycles in China</Topic>

<Nationality>USA</Nationality>Living in China has caused me to become reacquainted with something from my childhood: a bicycle. This is by far the most popular means of transportation in China, and given its population and income. It is an effective method.
Having a bike as opposed to a car has many advantages. Traffic in China is a huge problem and having a bicycle allows one to navigate the streets easier. Also parking is at a premium, therefore, having a car could be more trouble than it is worth.
I think bicycles in China are a permanent feature. With China's enormous population, a car for every individual is not feasible. The streets are crowded as is, and an increase of cars would just contribute to the already existing traffic problem. As incomes rise, I do think that more people will have a car, but bikes will still be prominent. Perhaps as the country becomes wealthier more people will move to motorized bikes or scooters instead of cars. Though cars offer many advantages, a person living in a Chinese city would be much better off with a smaller, more agile method of transportation.
