Different cultures have different views of family and society. However, it is probably universal that families (groups of people related by kinship or marriage) form the basic units that comprise societies. Sometimes, families are viewed as microcosms of their respective societies, in that their structures and functions may be similar.
Families relate to society in that they must contribute to society through work, avoid engaging in activities detrimental to society, and provide society with offspring who are educated to function in said society. Attitudes held by families often become the attitudes of their respective society.
Society also has certain influences on families. Economic and legal policies can affect decisions of families. Society also has certain responsibilities to families, in terms of protection of legal rights and defense against aggressors. Other, more specific examples of family-society influences are very culturally specific and therefore, beyond the scope of this essay.
The family-society relationship and its connection to my future life are related to the above sentence. My family is part of two societies. This will require efforts for understanding on both parts. However, many others have also had a mixed family, with many rewards to show for it. Whatever influences my family will have on the two societies, only time will tell. We will try our best to make all influences positive.
