The Internet is now commonly used in the office, among students, at home, and in research. It provides many benefits, while bringing some problems. However, the positive aspects of the Internet are far greater than the negative aspects.
For home and office use, the Internet provides easy access to vital information. This saves time and money, which are what many people value most (especially at work). However, the Internet can also serve as a distraction due to its entertainment value. This also means that, in the home, children can be exposed to inappropriate material. Proper management by parents and supervisors can prevent such abuse.
The Internet also provides information to students and researchers. While of enormous benefit in this area, the role of essential library research through scholarly books and journal articles has been diminished. While the Internet should by all means be utilized in serious research, its value is primarily for obtaining statistical and data supplements. Nothing can replace extensive study of original works, secondary sources, arid scholarly journal articles. The Internet may be used as a guide to vital sources, or perhaps to locate and correspond with leading researchers.
Despite possible problems, progressive people use the Internet as the premier information source. As with anything, correct use will maximize advantages and minimize disadvantages.
