Many traditionally conservative ideas, both social and economic, are attractive to broader groups of people than the modern GOP has reached and than pundits are willing to admit. The fault lies in large part with the most extreme elements of the party's base, which keeps elevating leaders who have embraced isolating and alienating language, along with policies that limit opportunities for conservatives to expand their appeal. But it also spans a media universe where small government and traditional values are treated as if they have no appeal to minorities and where the embrace of market economies is presented as the enemy of working people. The RNC might be waking up to an important opportunity the party keeps finding ways to squander. When Republicans get out of the comfort zone of largely white rural and suburban areas, they find supporters they might not have expected, so long as their messages and policies marry conservatism to inclusivity and avoid the cruel and divisive rhetoric that has lately defined the party. Jennifer Stoddard Hajdu, the newly-elected chairwoman of the Dallas County Republican Party, told us the RNC's Coppell venue will be available for Diwali celebrations, among other community events aimed at attracting voters of South Asian descent. "It gives us the opportunity to actually reach out to the community and not just say come vote our way," Hajdu said. This strategy also moves at least a little political energy from the national level to the local level, a good choice for the GOP. Too often, our politics is treated like a sport, and nowadays a bloodsport. National political division gets all of the attention, and the sharper the division the better. But some of our most important politics still revolves around local issues, where things need to get done and do get done in ways they don't seem to anymore on the national level. Efficient, effective and limited government is a core principle of conservatism that is often rewarded on the local level. Our national politics needs to connect more deeply on that level. Rather than having political agents parachute into the suburbs for barnstorming and fundraising, centers like the one the GOP is setting up can provide local Republicans a chance to focus on local constituents. Finally, this strategy gives accountability a fighting chance. If it's done right, the Republican Party will become more answerable to a broader group of voters than it has been appealing to in recent cycles.
