Several years ago, I was working a night shift with a medical student in the emergency department. I noticed he had an accent and asked him his story. He told me that he had grown up in an ultra-Orthodox community in New York and that until he was 19 he spoke almost no English and learned no secular subjects in his yeshiva. He left his community, learned English, got a GED and went on to college and medical school. Mr. Margolin is wrong when he denies that some Jewish schools are failing to provide the minimum education needed to function in America, a failure that demands government intervention.
