Kathleen Parker's April 4 op-ed, "In Georgia, Republicans are keeping the Big Lie alive," shined the light where it belongs — on former president Donald Trump's Big Lie. GOP legislators in Georgia and dozens of other states are rushing to fix a problem that doesn't exist. The 2020 presidential election was not stolen; it was not fraudulent. Approximately 7 million more voters voted for Joe Biden than for Mr. Trump. Mr. Trump lost fair and square, as affirmed by the courts and the Justice Department. But Mr. Trump's Big Lie was consumed by much of the GOP leadership and has become its rallying cry. It's irrational, so rational discussions are not possible. Just as driving under the influence (DUI) threatens lives on our highways, legislatures legislating under the influence (LUI) of Mr. Trump's Big Lie are a serious threat to our democracy. We know the penalties for DUI; what are the penalties for LUI?
