摘要：Academic reading and writing involve a constellation of high-utility language skills that correspond to linguistic features prevalent in academic discourse across disciplinary areas but that are infrequent in colloquial conversations. These skills are considered significant for adolescent learners to navigate an information-based society and to access educational and professional opportunities. The research team led by Dr. Paola Uccelli at Harvard University and Dr. Wenjuan Qin at Fudan University proposes a theoretical framework to operationalize and assess these Core Academic Language Skills (CALS), particularly targeting adolescent monolingual and bilingual language learners in the U.S. and in China. Repetitive empirical studies have shown that CALS could significantly capture individual variability in adolescents’ academic language skills and make unique contribution to their reading comprehension and writing proficiency, for both monolingual English speakers and EFL learners. These findings will be discussed in relation to pedagogical implications in diverse educational contexts.
